Debt & The Bible

Via

Oh how easy it is to get deep in debt! We get letters about every other day saying that we've been pre-approved for a credit card or loan. Everyone else is buying now and paying later! Why can't we? But what does the Bible say about debt?

It says...

(Rms 13:8)Owe no man any thing, but to love one another

Don't owe anyone anything, that's pretty self explanitory. But is it saying it's wrong to borrow? No, just that it's much better not to. And in the verses preceeding this we read of the importance of  "rendering unto all their dues"

(Pro 22:7, ESV)The rich rules over the poor,  and the borrower is the slave of the lender

A slave? And the more debt you have the longer the servitude.

(Mat 6:24)No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Mammon, or money, is what so many today choose to serve. More, more, more-they just aren't satisfied with what they have! They would rather enjoy what this earth has to offer instead of what He has to offer. We must give God our best, not offering Him what's left over!

(Pro 24:27)Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.

Wait a minute-does this mean we're supposed to work and earn the money before we can buy something? The danger behind this "Buy Now, Pay Later" mentality is the selfishness that often fuels the purchase. Do we really need the item? Could we make do without it for a few more weeks before we buy it?

Is debt bad? Yes. Is it all wrong? No. There are times when we may need to. We must make sure that we have the right attitude towards it!

I am thankful that we are able to pay for my husbands schooling later when he, Lord willing, has a better paying job. We also have a credit card. Luckily we are getting close to getting that payed off! We are trying to get all of these debts payed off and also save some for a down payment for a house. It's tough sometimes but later it will all be worth it!

  1. Thanks so much for linking up with us Ashlyn! What great verses on debt. We too had to take out a loan while my husband finished school. After he was done it was so tempting to think "after so much scrimping and saving, we *deserve!* to spend this money."

    No!

We borrowed and are commanded to pay back what we ow. Sending in that last check and no longer owing any man for my husband's education was wonderful!

  2. So exciting that you are getting so close to paying off some big debt! It takes commitment to save and not spend, but it's so worth it!

  3. Hello Ashlyn: Honestly I don't know how I got here!!! LOL... I just kept clicking and here I am... it's God!!

well I just wanted to say that I totally agree with this post... though I believe not all debt is intentional. Let me explain. In 2008-09, my husband who is a self business owner, business took a big hit, due to the economy. No one wanted to do anything to their homes (He is a painting contractor). So naturally we have struggled since then trying to live to pay our bills. (just a little peek at what one of our bills were - mortgage $5k... we live in NY -LI ... yes it is super expensive to live here) Because of this he actually had to use credit cards to pay for material to start jobs to make money and in turn things got even worse. So today we are still trying to get out of it... we have gone through a lot... I know he has done everything possible to provide for his family... I know that God sees that as well. Our priority is tithing, food, bills and then the rest.
Praise the Lord, we were able to refinance our home so we did not have to lose it to foreclosure 6 months ago... God has been good to us... we are together have health and serve the Lord. I know that we need to get out our debt and we are little by little!
    God Bless you!

  4. Monica: I completely agree! Sometimes debt can't be avoided. I hope it didn't come across that all debt is wrong! (Unless of course we have a selfish attitude towards it) Thanks so much for stopping by! :)
