Shoes of Preparation

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;(Ephesians 6:15)

The primary purpose of shoes is to protect the feet. A soldier with an injured foot did not have a very good chance of survival. He could not move very fast and was much more likely to be killed since he would be the easy target. Shoes were an important part of a soldier's armour.

As Christians, our "shoes" are for us to be prepared with knowledge of the gospel. We must be prepared so that we have an answer when others ask us questions about God's word.
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: ( 1 Peter 3:15)
Knowledge of the truth will also help us to avoid false teachers. The more we know about God's word, the easier it will be for us to determine when someone is teaching contrary to it. (A little off subject here but--It is so important that you check everything you read/hear concerning the Bible! Anyone can make a mistake and of course, there are also those who teach falsely on purpose. Please make sure you are truly learning the truth!)
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.(Matthew 7:15)
Being prepared with knowledge of the gospel is extremely important. But why did he choose our shoes to associate knowledge with? Shoes are something that are always on our feet when we are out around others. Going back to 1 Peter 3:15 we are told to "be ready always". We must always be ready and willing to share God's word with others!

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; (Isaiah 52:7)

Belt of Truth

"Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth..." Ephesians 6:14
The first piece of armour that a soldier would put on was his belt. It was essential. Not only did it provide protection, it also helped to hold other pieces of armour, like the sword, in place.

Just like the soldier, if we don't have truth the rest of our armour won't function properly. We must have the foundation of truth.
"...thy word is truth" John 17:17
To truly know the truth we must study God's word and do so often. Immersing ourselves in the Bible daily will help us in a number of ways.

  • We will know the truth. Obviously to know something you must study about it. Your doctor didn't just wake up one morning with a vast array of medical knowledge. He spent many hours studying to learn the information. We must also spend time studying, not just reading but truly digging into God's word.
  • Obedience to the truth frees us from being a servant of sin. (John 8:33)
  • Studying increases our faith(Romans 10:17)
  • Knowing the truth will help us not to be deceived by false teachers. (2 Peter 2:1) There are those in the world who are teaching things contrary to God's word. They may be doing this on accident or intentionally. We must verify everything we are taught against God's word!
Have you put on your belt today?
