"Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth..." Ephesians 6:14The first piece of armour that a soldier would put on was his belt. It was essential. Not only did it provide protection, it also helped to hold other pieces of armour, like the sword, in place.
Just like the soldier, if we don't have truth the rest of our armour won't function properly. We must have the foundation of truth.
"...thy word is truth" John 17:17To truly know the truth we must study God's word and do so often. Immersing ourselves in the Bible daily will help us in a number of ways.
- We will know the truth. Obviously to know something you must study about it. Your doctor didn't just wake up one morning with a vast array of medical knowledge. He spent many hours studying to learn the information. We must also spend time studying, not just reading but truly digging into God's word.
- Obedience to the truth frees us from being a servant of sin. (John 8:33)
- Studying increases our faith(Romans 10:17)
- Knowing the truth will help us not to be deceived by false teachers. (2 Peter 2:1) There are those in the world who are teaching things contrary to God's word. They may be doing this on accident or intentionally. We must verify everything we are taught against God's word!
