"and having on the breastplate of righteousness;" (Ephesians 6:14)The breastplate was the central piece of a soldier's armour. It provided protection to all the vital organs. Without it death would be much more likely.
"Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death." (Proverbs 11:4)
Just as the breastplate protects the soldier from death, righteousness protects us from death. But what is righteousness?
"And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the Lord our God, as he hath commanded us." (Deut. 6:25)To put on the breastplate of righteousness we must obey God's commands. Notice the word all in this verse? We have to do everything God has commanded us!
" Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he."(Genesis 6:22)Noah did everything exactly as God commanded him. That's why God said to Noah,
"Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation." (Genesis 7:1)If Noah had built the ark to different detentions he would not have been saved from the floods. Just as Noah did, we must do exactly what God has commanded us. We must obey his command for us and continue to live faithfully! We can't just pick and choose what commands fit with the life we're living! (Revelations 22:18-19)
